Volkswagen has announced that its 2012 Beetle will start at $19,765, which is just $325 more than the New Beetle it replaces. The base 2.5 model is powered by VW's 170-hp, 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine paired with either a five-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic. The $24,165 Beetle 2.0 will ship with the same 200-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the GTI, bolted to a six-speed manual or optional DSG dual-clutch automatic. Finally, the TDI diesel model borrows VW's ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbo-diesel that makes 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

No pricing was given for the TDI, which doesn’t go on sale until next year, or the confirmed 2013 Beetle R model, but we were told that the TDI will be positioned above the 2.5 and 2.0, and thus we estimate it will cost around $25K. The strategy is similar to that of the current Golf and Jetta TDIs, which sit at the top of their model lines. The high-performance Beetle R may crest $30k, just as the upcoming Golf R will.

The Beetle's sub-$20k base price nets you niceties such as a leather steering wheel, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and an eight-speaker audio system. Bluetooth and iPod connectivity are optional on the 2.5 and standard on the 2.0. The 2.0 also adds larger brakes with red calipers, 18-inch aluminum wheels, aluminum pedals, different seat surfaces, fog lights, a rear spoiler, and three extra dashboard gauges. The 2012 Beetle is expected to hit dealers sometime this summer.
