2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Since the 2008 C63 AMG went on sale, Mercedes has sold nearly 20,000 examples worldwide of the sedan and its not-for-the-U.S. wagon counterpart. Not bad for a hard-core enthusiast machine, but Mercedes still thinks it's leaving something on the table. Enter the latest addition to the C-class AMG lineup, this C63 coupe. It just so happens that the C63's biggest competition, the BMW M3, comes in coupe and sedan shells, too.

Latest 2013 Ford Escape Spy Photos Confirm EcoBoost Power, Vertrek-Inspired Design

We’ve previously spied the upcoming 2013 Ford Escape, but these latest photos both show more of the crossover’s shape and confirm our previous suspicions about what might power it. When last we saw a 2013 Escape test mule, it was wearing current-generation Ford Kuga bodywork, so these new images are the first to show off the new shape. The overall look follows that of Ford's Vertrek concept, including the swoopy greenhouse, bulging hood, swept-back headlights (whose Focus-style inset turn indicators are taped over here), and strong character line running from the front wheelarch to the tip of the taillights. Those taillights and a new fender vent seem the lone elements that seriously deviate from the Vertrek. That concept sported simple, single-form taillights, while this prototype's taillights feature a thin extension that wraps onto the rear quarter panels just like those on Ford's 2012 Focus hatch (see the close-up shot of the taillight in the gallery below).

More compelling, though, are the shots of the vehicle sans front and rear fascias. The exposed front-mounted intercooler confirms our previous hunches about Ford's adoption of EcoBoost power for its baby sport utility. The base engine for the 2013 Escape is likely to be Ford's naturally aspirated 168-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder, joined in the powertrain lineup by either a 1.6-liter, turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter EcoBoost, or both. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost is the same engine found in the Vertrek concept, and we’d expect it to produce somewhere near 180 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost should be good for 237-ish hp and 250 lb-ft of torque, and would make for an interesting Kia Sportage SX competitor. A hybrid powertrain is almost guaranteed, whether an evolution of the system in the current Escape hybrid or possibly a plug-in affair. We’ll bring you more details as they become available; in the meantime, check out the gallery below for more spy photos of the 2013 Escape.

New Subaru Sports Coupe Spy Photos Show Interior, Nose

For us auto journalists, there's a familiar face (and shirt, and shoes) in these latest spy photos, which show a Subaru rear-wheel-drive coupe prototype surrounded by company hangers-on. For everyone else, the important bit concerns the clearest shot yet of the cabin. There, a pretty plain shift lever is visible, as are a row of toggle switches on the center console. The steering wheel appears to be equipped with shift paddles, as promised.

The photos also provide a good look at what we can confidently say is the Subaru nose, which will in fact resemble the Toyota/Scion's. The cars will share most if not all body panels and will differ minimally, possibly with unique front and rear fascias, but maybe in badge only. As we've reported previously, the cars' overall shapes resemble a toned-down version of the styling seen on the most recent concept version, the Scion FR-S.

The extent of all the badge-engineering should become clear at the end of November when the Toyota and Subaru versions of the car are unveiled at the Tokyo auto show.

Ram Begins Deliveries of 140 Plug-In Hybrid Pickups to Local Governments for Testing

This week, Yuma, Arizona, became the first of 12 U.S. cities to receive a fleet of Ram pickups that have been equipped with plug-in hybrid electric powertrains. The trucks are part of a three-year, $100m demonstration program sponsored by Chrysler and the U.S. Department of Energy. Each one of the 10 trucks arriving in Yuma—like the 130 more to be distributed elsewhere— is equipped with Chrysler's tried-and-true 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 under the hood and a liquid-cooled, 12.9-kWh battery pack tucked beneath the second row bench. In case of a local power outage, the powertrain is capable of a "reverse power flow" to keep the lights on—at least in City Hall.

The trucks also feature a two-mode transmission "based upon two-speed transmission technology that was readily available from a previous vehicle electrification project," Chrysler's press release said. (Reading between the lines, Chrysler has finally found something to do with a hunk of leftover transmissions from the ill-timed previous-gen Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen hybrids.) Also along for the ride are regenerative brakes, cylinder deactivation, and a 240-volt/30-amp four-prong power outlet and 120-volt/20-amp outlet power strip in the cargo bed to power tools, cell phones, and margarita blenders.

The municipalities earmarked for the plug-in pickups are scattered from coast to coast and from Arizona to North Dakota, for use in both cities and rural areas, in order to gather a wide range of usage data and to see where and in which circumstances big-battery technology does best. Needless to say, the usage data collected will be markedly different than that which Toyota is gleaning from its Prius plug-in hybrid program. But unlike the Prius plug-in, which goes into production in 2012, the Ram plug-in hybrid program is strictly experimental, as is an upcoming endeavor to build 25 Chrysler Town & Country plug-in hybrids, and there are no plans for a production version.

Confirmed: Next Porsche 911 to Launch with 7-Speed Manual Transmission (Yes, the Clutch-Pedal Kind)

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. More isn’t always better. We’ll agree in terms of power, but respectfully pass when we’re talking about weight. Transmission gears? We’re not sure. Some recent automatics have featured seven and eight forward ratios (and ZF has even announced a nine-speed auto), but the maximum for traditional clutch-and-lever manual transmissions has been six for some time. That’s about to change, however, because we’ve confirmed from various corporate sources that Porsche will offer a seven-speed manual in the next-generation 911.

The point is to offer a tall, seventh gear for improved efficiency and reduced engine noise during long cruises. The shifting experience is said to be similar to that of the current six-speed manual—which we love—there’s just a bit more rowing to do, although, depending on the ratio spread, veteran Porsche drivers might also have to slightly tweak their thinking in terms of gear choice for upcoming corners. Unless something changes and the shift pattern is seriously wacky, though, we doubt anyone will get confused during hard driving, since seventh will hardly be anyone’s go-to gear for corner exit.

As to the next 911 itself, it carries the internal 991 designation and is scheduled to debut at the Frankfurt auto show this September. It will be based on the stretched architecture of the 996/997 and offer more rear seat space and a more comfortable, luxurious interior. Vehicle stability will be improved thanks to a longer wheelbase. Future generations of the 911, however, are expected to share many components with the next-gen Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo as part of the VW Group’s highly flexible Modularer Sportbaukasten, or “modular sports architecture.” When and if this platform convergence happens, the 911 will keep its rear-engine layout, although the powerplant may nevertheless be moved forward significantly.

Porsche’s seven-speed manual only adds to the multiple gearbox options in the sports-car segment, which include dual-clutch, torque-converter, and modified automatics; traditional manuals; and even an entirely new single-clutch automatic in the Lamborghini Aventador. Will the seven-speed manual be offered by other automakers as well? At present, a supplier source tells us additional interest in the technology is limited.

Hot Wheels and Tanner Foust Launch Truck 332 Feet From Giant Toy Track at Indy 500 [VIDEO]

As if the Greatest Spectacle in Racing needed more spectacle, toy-car maker Hot Wheels decided to toss in a giant ramp and a stadium truck. The idea was to capture a new world record for four-wheeled vehicle distance jump, and the whole thing took place as part of the Indianapolis 500‘s pre-race festivities. For added flair, the attempt was made using a larger-than-life section of orange Hot Wheels track hanging from the top of an equally humongous door; together, they rose 100 feet above the raceway's infield. Adding to the anticipation of the jump, Hot Wheels kept the identity of the driver a secret, referring to him only as the "Yellow Driver," and one of four drivers for "Team Hot Wheels." The team drivers—the others are Green, Red, and Blue; we think they might be moonlighting from Power Ranger gigs—strive to accomplish outrageous drift, Moto X, and rally-based feats that fans can watch in short webisodes on the Team Hot Wheels site.

The Indy jump went off without a hitch this past Sunday, and the Yellow Driver—later outed as American Top Gear host and rally pilot Tanner Foust—and his stadium truck sailed 332 feet for a new world record. The Hot Wheels crew didn't simply put a truck on a huge ramp and cross their fingers, though. Foust put in three months of practice before the public stunt, and as one can imagine, the jump is a bit more complicated than driving flat out down a ramp. The truck’s transition onto the steep ramp can make its rear wheels go very light, and in a worst case scenario could send the thing nosediving into the ground. Furthermore, Foust actually doesn't hit full throttle until the bottom of the ramp, at which point the truck “bottoms out” and larger contact patches provide a big uptick in grip; the focus during the 100-foot trip down the ramp is on keeping the rig pointed straight. The ramp is just 40 feet wide, and after leveling out, Foust has just 90 feet to accelerate to more than 100 mph before hitting a 16-ft kick-up. During the trick, he was in the air for four seconds.

In all, the jump was a well-executed childhood fantasy brought to life, and you can check out the video of the record-breaking stunt below.

Audi Crams 503 hp into A1 ClubSport Quattro, Sends it to Austria

While much has been made about VW's decontenting efforts to reach its vaunted 800,000-units-shifted-stateside-by-'18 goal, zee Germans have been on a bit of a Rennsport-inspired tear in the rest of the world, unveiling the Polo R WRC car and trotting out an inline-5-powered Golf to compete at the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring in June. But said Polo only offers up 300 hp, and the Golf just 434. When the Austrian Wörtherseetour comes around, that's simply too meager a dose of lunacy.

Astute readers may remember that in 2007, VW rolled out a 641-horse GTI, powered by the twin-turbo W-12 yanked from the engine bay of a Bentley Continental GT and planted amidships in the hapless Golf. While the turbo I5 in this year's factory-supported blue-sky hot rod only makes 503 horsepower, it occupies the nose of a tiny Audi A1. The A1 Clubsport Quattro, as Audi's calling it, is much more a showpiece than an actual rennwagen. And it's not as light as one might expect. Weighing in at 3064 lb, it's not exactly a featherweight racer — despite the carbon-fiber roof and omission of the rear seat. The sprint to 62 takes 3.7 seconds, according to Ingolstadt. We recently caned a DSG-equipped Euro-spec TT RS to 60 in 3.6, by dint of the car's fantastic launch control. We're assuming that the three-pedal Clubsport is not so equipped, given that, according to Audi, the hot TT weighs nearly 160 lb more and gives up 168 hp.

The event-horizon maw is the little car's most glaring feature, but we like the subtle box-flare job, a callback to the ur-Quattro that's somehow more successful than the squishy RS5-derived Quattro-redux. (Check out our feature on those two cars here.) We also dig the outré turbine wheels that recall the BBS units used on the old Audi 80 IMSA cars. Said wheels hide six-piston carbon-ceramic brakes in the front, while the rear makes do with steel discs. And just in case you're curious as to how Audi envisions the whole package working, it'll be available in Need For Speed World as a free in-game rental from June 1-4.

The Continental: Speaking with Chrysler/Lancia’s Olivier Francois, Klaus Bischoff on VW Styling, and Germany’s (Sort of) Power Trip

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

At the Lancia Ypsilon international launch in Torino this week, I sat down with Chrysler and Lancia CEO Olivier Francois to discuss the merging brands’ strategy.

The product portfolios of Lancia and Chrysler will be virtually identical, and there will be a clear market separation, he says. No market will offer both brands. The U.K. and Ireland, e.g., are going to be Chrysler markets, and therefore the Ypsilon, as well as the Delta, will be sold as Chryslers there. Neither of these models will be offered in the U.S., says Francois. The styling language will merge, with the grille of the Ypsilon serving as an indicator for future products.

Francois wants to take Chrysler and Lancia upmarket: “We want to compete better with the imported European brands,” he says, explaining: “There is a share of Chrysler’s market that has gone to the imports. We want to own it again.” So will the next 200 be a 3-series competitor and the 300 a 5-series fighter? Yes, he says—not exclusively, but also. In fact, Lancia will somewhat pull up Chrysler: The interior of the 300C Executive Series is molded after the 300′s Lancia counterpart, the Thema.

Europe won’t get a Thema V-8 with either of the 300′s V-8 engines: “The Thema is all about silence,” says Francois. On the other hand, Chrysler won’t offer the 300 in the U.S. with the V-6 turbo-diesel. But these variations are an option at a later stage: “We could consider it, but it is not in the plan right now.” An Imperial? “Possible, but not a priority.” What’s not happening is a station wagon; the segment, Francois feels, is dead.

What about downsizing engines? Not happening immediately. “The U.S. market is about V-6 and V-8 engines,” Francois is convinced. Downsized, turbocharged fours will come with the next generation of compact and mid-size sedans as Chrysler integrates Fiat Group platforms.

Meanwhile, the 200, which was shown as the Lancia Flavia concept at the Geneva auto show, will only be offered in Europe as a fabric-top, V-6–powered convertible; the lack of a diesel would render the sedan unsaleable.

There is no interest in using Michael Stoschek’s Stratos concept to increase the Lancia brand’s visibility. It is too far removed from Lancia’s current lineup, and it would raise expectations the brand can’t fulfill. But the unbelievable fact that the Stratos nameplate was lost years ago haunts Lancia executives today. “It would not happen today,” I am told.

Behind the Wheel of the Lancia Ypsilon

So what does the Ypsilon drive like? A lot better than I expected. It has moved from the Punto platform to the smaller Panda architecture, and, compared to its predecessor, it grows only very slightly in size. At around 2100 pounds, the Ypsilon also is rather light—and it therefore feels quick and alive both with the torquey 1.3-liter turbo-diesel (148 lb-ft of torque, 94 hp) and the 0.9-liter, turbocharged two-cylinder gasoline engine (107 lb-ft, 84 hp). I did not sample the entry-level, naturally aspirated 1.2-liter four (75 lb-ft, 68 hp). The diesel is surprisingly smooth, and the noise level of the engine and the entire car is low even at autobahn velocities. The two-cylinder gasoline engine, by contrast, is acoustically always present. It emits a low, raspy note, and you are always aware of what is going on under the hood—although you tend to underestimate the rpm. This rev-happy engine constantly hits the limiter if you don’t watch the tach. The throb at idle reminds me of the Citroën 2CV—a questionable historic reference, but fun nevertheless. The chassis is clearly on the comfy side. Moreover, the stability-control system kicks in early, and the Ypsilon never encourages spirited driving.

In typical Lancia fashion, the seating surfaces and trim parts use stylish and expensive materials, but there is evidence of cost-cutting as well. For a competitor of the Mini, the Audi A1, and the Citroën DS3, the overall execution is not quite there. On the other hand, this is the cheapest of the quartet, undercutting the competition by some €3000.

A Faster Audi Q3?

Audi will launch the Q3 compact shortly, with a 211-hp TFSI four-cylinder as its top-of the line engine. But I’d be surprised if Audi doesn’t have something very interesting—and far more powerful—to add above it. I’ll keep you posted.

VW Styling

Under the leadership of Klaus Bischoff, the VW brand is reinventing its styling. You might feel that most recent VWs look too similar, but when asked which new models are most important from a design perspective, Bischoff pointedly tells me: “The Beetle, the Bulli concept, and the Golf, and you will notice they have very distinct faces, but share a common approach. All of them, in their own way, conform to our styling language entirely.” What is this styling language? “Precision and solidity with an iconic and purist quality. We strive to achieve extreme tension, but without any superficial effects.”

It is obvious that some of VW’s last models, particularly those styled under former chief designer Murat Günak, follow a rather different styling philosophy. This includes some Chinese-market models like the Lavida—”pure Günak,” according to a VW designer. When presented with the new, cleaner styling language, VW’s Chinese joint venture partners swallowed hard. But local product clinics have shown that customers actually prefer the new look.

Later this year, the CC will be relaunched. Alas, like the European Passat, it will remain a compromise, with the center section of the cabin and the daylight opening untouched.

Power? Ja, Bitte

At 132 hp for the first four months of 2011, cars sold in Germany are more powerful on average than ever. The reason for the record, ironically, is the high diesel penetration, which has grown to 46.6 percent. Most SUVs are equipped with powerful diesels, while entry-level compact and minicars are typically powered by naturally aspirated gasoline engines. On average, Porsches sold here are most powerful, at 349 hp on average, followed by Jaguar (301 hp) and Land Rover (231 hp). The wimpiest fleets are provided by Smart (70 hp), Fiat (84 hp), and Renault’s budget brand Dacia (89 hp). And the few electric vehicles sold here make a low 50 hp on average.

This week, I saw Porsche 911 and BMW 1-series protoypes testing around Stuttgart and Munich. The 911 still sounds great, and its proportions look very similar to the current model’s. The same goes for the BMW 1-series: For many people, the only way to tell new from old will be the new, distinct headlights (which I didn’t catch).

2012 Honda Civic EX sedan

Honda's new Civic boasts lots of refinements and good fuel economy, but the thrill is gone.

It's been a compact-car sales leader for decades, a pacesetter in technical innovation since the clever emissions-reducing Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion engine in 1975, and a car whose fun-to-drive index has almost always ranked at the top of its class. Now here we are with the latest renewal—generation nine—and we confront the inevitable questions: Does the latest Honda Civic carry on the enviable tradition of its honorable ancestors? Is it still transportation for the spirit, as well as the body?

Chrysler Asks Fan to Show Their Most Insanely Tuned Mopars in the Mopar Top Eliminator Competition

Mopar Top Eliminator winner, 2007

For the fifth year, Chrysler’s Mopar division is challenging owners of Chryslers, Dodges, and Plymouths of all vintages to produce highly modified masterpieces for its Top Eliminator competition. While “Top Eliminator” sounds like it could be a new, testosterone-laden trim level for the Grand Caravan, it’s actually a serious contest for the company: The most spectacular entries will be taken to Vegas in the fall, where they will be featured on the Mopar stand at the annual SEMA show. After that, one winner will be picked at each of three events by panel of Mopar representatives. The first gathering is coming up soon—on June 4th and 5th—at the 27th-annual “Midwest Mopars in the Park," in Farmington, Minnesota. The next winner will be chosen at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, taking place from June 8th to the 10th. And the last one will be selected among the many Mopars that will be rumbling through Royal Oak, Michigan on August 20th during the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Past winners have mostly been muscle cars, including a 1970 Challenger, a 1968 Dodge Coronet, a 1970 Plymouth Super Bee, a 1971 Plymouth GTX, as well as a 2006 Dodge Charger SRT-8. Sadly, no Grand Caravan has been crowned Top Eliminator, though we think a turbocharged, stick-shifted Caravan from the 80s would win over the hearts and minds of any true fans of Mopar muscle.

Chrysler's sponsorship of this program is no surprise, considering the important role that Chrysler's storied aftermarket division now plays in the marketing of Chrysler's new cars. Mopar has been very busy lately, making nifty add-ons for Challengers, an awesome pickup-truck conversion for the Jeep Wrangler, and a go-anywhere pack for Ram trucks. As we reported a few weeks ago, Mopar is giving customers of its 2012 Chrysler 300 a choice of no fewer than eight grille options and six accessory wheel and tire packages.

Top Eliminator is the sort of program we love, encouraging real passion for automotive ownership and personalization. Kudos to Mopar for shining the spotlight on its most creative and loyal customers. Check back this fall to see the winning vehicles.

The renderings you see here may—and we can’t stress the uncertainty of that enough—depict the production version of BMW’s upcoming Gran Coupé, Bavaria’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The Gran Coupé concept debuted at the 2010 Beijing auto show, where we learned that it is headed for production at some point. These images depict a car very similar to both the concept and the notion of a four-door 6-series, which just how BMW has pitched the vehicle. They’re also similar to the sort of renderings filed in Europe’s design patent system, a database that recently outed the next-gen Mercedes-Benz A-class ahead of schedule.

Is the market hungering for more four-door coupes, now that the CLS and Audi’s A7 occupy the space, along with other racy four-doors like the Jaguar XF and the Maserati Quattroporte? Maybe not, but we see nothing wrong with having more beautiful cars on the road. Even if the Gran Coupé  only sells in small volumes, it’s a relatively inexpensive endeavor for BMW—it would use an existing platform and engines—and is yet another slinky means of attracting attention to the brand.
