2012 BMW M5

Your dreams! Your dreams! The Bavarian Motor Workers and M GmbH want your dreams! In return, you shall receive seat time in their new M Fünf sedan car. Via the M-Power website's Closed Room, former M GmbH CEO and current Mini brand manager Dr. Key Segler invites you to drive what he calls "A business sedan and an automobile with the emotional density and driving experience of a supersports car." And we do like our business sedans and automobiles like we like our women—emotionally dense and excessively turbocharged.

Segler goes on to state, "With the BMW M5, our aim is to make automobile dreams come true—and that means your dreams." Because we are apparently automobiles. Which, come to think of it, makes total sense given our preference for women with turbochargers. The salient point? If you register at the Closed Room and submit your 2012 M5–associated dreams, the M folks may just send you an invite to drive the new car during the final testing and/or launch events. But don't be alarmed if Segler—or his replacement, Friedrich Nitschke—shows up late at night wearing a red and black sweater.

Subaru’s Motion-V Five-Year Plan Includes Three New Models, a Hybrid, and More Toyota Cooperation

As is customary for Japanese automakers, Subaru’s parent company Fuji Heavy Industries has released a five-year action plan outlining its goals for the near future. (You can read about Nissan and Infiniti's similar plan, released last week.) Subaru's plan, called Motion-V, covers new models, cooperation with Toyota, and sales goals, among other things.

Three New Models, Hybrid on the Way

The biggest news gleaned from the announcement is the planned addition of three all-new models to the Subaru family, as well as the brand's first hybrid, by 2016. The hybrid model will arrive for 2013 and likely use technology developed with or borrowed from Toyota, Subaru's latest strategic partner. Chances are it will be based on the Impreza or Legacy platform, and not a new, separate model.

We're already familiar with one of the three new models: the eagerly anticipated and yet-unnamed rear-wheel-drive sports car due in spring 2012, a car developed by Subaru and shared with Toyota/Scion. The other two new models aren't discussed, leading us to believe they're a bit further out on the calendar. Understandably, Subaru's not tipping its hand to competitors.

In Japan, Toyota will continue to supply Subaru with the Trezia compact car, which is basically a rebadged Toyota Ractis—itself, a close cousin to the Toyota Yaris. Subaru also will continue an agreement to get minicars from Toyota-controlled Daihatsu, which will provide Subaru with all of its minicar models from spring 2012 onward.

New Technology and Lofty Ambitions

The company says the next half-decade should bring safety features and environmentally friendly technologies never seen before on a Subie. That includes EyeSight, a stereo-camera system for accident avoidance, which was previewed on the Impreza concept but so far hasn't been offered on a production Subaru.

Other stated goals include increasing the fuel efficiency of Subaru products by 30 percent across the product range globally (which the 2012 Impreza proved is realistic), and reducing production expenses by 20 percent, despite rising material costs and regulatory structures that get more demanding by the year. Another initiative seeks to raise the perceived quality of the company's products.

Subaru hopes to raise its worldwide annual sales from the 633,000 it plans for 2012 to 900,000 per year by 2016, on to one million sales per year within the next decade. Subaru is also placing special emphasis on moving metal in China and here in North America, where it hopes 380,000 of those 900,000 units will be delivered.

Those are high marks to hit indeed, but Subaru’s sales in the U.S. have grown even during the recession, so future product along with the upcoming Impreza may be able to sustain the growth.

2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Befriending Stuttgart's twin-turbocharged beast.

Porsche's 911 GT2 RS is a brute, a lightweight, twin-turbocharged, 620-hp bout of madness that stemmed from Stuttgart's quest to see how high up the sports-car ladder the 911 could punch. Overpowered almost to a fault and with enough grip to peel lane markings off the pavement, it is the most serious roadgoing Porsche ever.

Performance Edition Package for Current BMW 335i Adds 20 hp for $550

2011 BMW 335i Sedan

With production of the current generation of BMW 3-series sedan winding down—a new sedan is just around the corner—BMW has announced a very reasonably priced Performance Edition package as a send-off during the months of August, September, and October.

The package costs $550; of highest interest is an output boost from the stock 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque to 320 and 332. It also adds black grilles and grille surrounds, as well as Performance Edition badging. Since the bundle is dealer-installed, it’s available for any rear-wheel-drive 335i coupe or sedan, regardless of gearbox. Folks who already own an N55-powered 335i can even bring their car in for an upgrade, too. BMW hasn’t said whether the package would continue to be offered for the E92 3-series coupe (which will carry on for at least a year) after the new sedan debuts.

For a company that charges $500 for heated front seats, this is a great deal—and perhaps even enough to stave off buyer’s remorse when the new car arrives.

With the Saab 9-4X Headed to Dealers, Swedish Production Remains Halted Until August 9

Dealers for cash-strapped Saab will begin receiving shipments of new product this week, even though European production has been on hiatus since the second week of June. Arriving on the trucks: the 9-4X crossover, which is built by General Motors in Mexico. GM also designed the 9-4X, and it’s a mechanical twin to the Cadillac SRX that is built at the same facility.

If any vehicle is going to save Saab—or at least pump some cash into the coffers in the short term—it’s the 9-4X. Volvo’s comparable midsize crossover, the XC60, is the company’s second-bestselling product, just as are the Lincoln MKX and Cadillac SRX for their respective brands. With just over 300 cars sold in the U.S. in June, Saab desperately needs the 9-4X to be successful.

As a Deal is Approved, Production is Set to Restart on August 9

Until the five-passenger crossover is able to rack up some sales, Saab will be using money from a just-approved deal to sell 50.1 percent of its factory and the land under it to a Swedish investment group. The Swedish government just approved the sale this week, which sees the investors then leasing the factory back to Saab. The total rake for the automaker is $40 million, and Saab says that will enable the company to pay its suppliers and resume production of the 9-3 and 9-5 on August 9. Whether that will happen, or more issues will arise in the interim—leaders of the company’s labor force indicated recently that they are unhappy with the work stoppages and amount of backpay owed—is uncertain, to say the least.

2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV EPA Ratings Announced

Mitsubishi's little i-MiEV electric car has been rated by the EPA: 126 city MPGe and 99 highway. Those numbers beat the Nissan Leaf’s 106/92 ratings. Because of its smaller battery pack, the i-MiEV’s projected range of 62 miles trails the Leaf’s by 11 miles. (Our semi-long-term Leaf has been averaging 58 miles to a charge, so YMMV.) In the more optimistic LA4 cycle, the i-MiEV can travel 98 miles on a full battery. When it goes on sale in November, the $27,990 i-MiEV will also beat the $33,630 Leaf on price (both are eligible for a $7500 federal tax credit), making it the least-expensive electric on the market.

In anticipation of the i-MiEV’s launch and to display its commitment to EV technology, Mitsubishi Motors teamed with Mitsubishi Electric to build a solar-powered car-charging station at its North American headquarters in Cypress, California. The station can accommodate four vehicles and is equipped with three types of chargers: 110-volt, 220-volt, and a high-voltage quick charger. The i-MiEV needs 22 hours to fully charge on 110 volts or six hours on 220-volt power, and the quick charger can get it to an 80-percent charge in 25 minutes. Mitsubishi hopes the charging station's central location between Los Angeles and Orange counties will attract EV commuters and will allow owners of any EVs and plug-ins to use the station.
