BMW has just confirmed that its six-cylinder version of the 6-series coupe, the 640i, will be offered to shoppers in the U.S. In the past, the company indicated that we’d only see the eight-cylinder 650i on these shores, while the 640i was to be confined to Europe.

The 640i will use BMW’s N55 single-turbo inline-six engine , which will produce more power than it does in other applications. Here, the engine should be good for roughly 320 hp, compared to the 300 it makes in other applications. (Although BMW recently introduced a six-cylinder 7-series, that car uses a slightly older iteration of the engine; its twin-turbocharged N54-series motor makes 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque.) Although the 650i coupe will offer an all-wheel drive as an option to buyers, the 640i will remain a strictly rear-drive affair. That said, we anticipate that like with the V-8-powered 650i, a manual transmission will be on the order sheet for the six-cylinder 6-series.
