2012 Chevrolet Sonic

As the fall on-sale date for Chevrolet's 2012 Sonic approaches, the company has provided more info about its forget-about-the-Aveo subcompact. Earlier this month we sampled the Sonic on a makeshift autocross course, and today the automaker announced that its new small car will start at $14,495.

For that coin, you’ll get the entry-level LS sedan; the price of admission an equivalent hatchback is $15,395. These "base" Sonic LS cars come standard with a powerful (for the class) 138-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine—shared with the Chevy Cruze—as well as 15-inch aluminum wheels, 10 airbags, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, power locks, stability control, a hill-hold feature, and a tilting/telescoping steering wheel. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is a $1070 option.

Stepping up to the better-equipped LT will set you back $15,695 for the sedan and $16,495 for the five-door. For the extra cash, the Sonic’s equipment list adds a six-speaker sound system, power windows, power heated side mirrors, Bluetooth, heated front seats, cruise control, fog lamps, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Like the Sonic LS, the LT model offers a six-speed automatic for $1070 to replace the standard five-cog stick. Chevy will also offer a range-topping LTZ trim with even more goodies, but it hasn’t released details or full pricing on those cars yet.

Enthusiasts will no doubt appreciate the opportunity to upgrade LT and LTZ models to a 1.4-liter turbocharged four and a six-speed stick. The turbo motor, which is shared with the larger Cruze, produces the same 138 hp as the standard naturally-aspirated 1.8-liter four, but it makes 23 more lb-ft of torque, for a total of 148 lb-ft. Chevy says it expects Sonics packing this powertrain combo to be rated at 40 highway miles per gallon.

On paper, the Sonic stacks up nicely in the subcompact segment, boasting more power than most of its competitors—the new Hyundai Accent matches it. Check back for a full review soon.
