2008 Ford Ranger

Ford will soon end production of its small Ranger pickup, according to the UAW chapter at Ford's Twin Cities Assembly Plant in St. Paul, Minnesota. The St. Paul plant will close after production ceases on December 22, 2011. Ford has yet to comment on the Ranger's fate, but it is unlikely that production of the small truck would be shifted to another facility. The current Ranger has been around in more or less the same form since the 1983 model year and it has been only occasionally face lifted and updated during its 28-year production run; the last major refresh occurred in 1993, when the Ranger adopted its current bodywork, which has only been mildy nipped and tucked in the years since. The Ranger also has been around long enough that it gained a driver's side airbag during a 1995 mid-cycle dashboard update. Thus, relocating the tooling and manpower for the assembly of a pickup whose most modern features are an available CD player and airbags makes slim business sense. Ford did recently debut its latest global Ranger pickup—long since a very different animal from our ancient hauler—in foreign markets, but the company has been mum on plans to bring it to the U.S.
