BMW Will Trade Your Dreams for a Spin in the New 2012 M5

2012 BMW M5

Your dreams! Your dreams! The Bavarian Motor Workers and M GmbH want your dreams! In return, you shall receive seat time in their new M Fünf sedan car. Via the M-Power website's Closed Room, former M GmbH CEO and current Mini brand manager Dr. Key Segler invites you to drive what he calls "A business sedan and an automobile with the emotional density and driving experience of a supersports car." And we do like our business sedans and automobiles like we like our women—emotionally dense and excessively turbocharged.

Segler goes on to state, "With the BMW M5, our aim is to make automobile dreams come true—and that means your dreams." Because we are apparently automobiles. Which, come to think of it, makes total sense given our preference for women with turbochargers. The salient point? If you register at the Closed Room and submit your 2012 M5–associated dreams, the M folks may just send you an invite to drive the new car during the final testing and/or launch events. But don't be alarmed if Segler—or his replacement, Friedrich Nitschke—shows up late at night wearing a red and black sweater.

Subaru’s Motion-V Five-Year Plan Includes Three New Models, a Hybrid, and More Toyota Cooperation

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. As is customary for Japanese automakers, Subaru’s parent company Fuji Heavy Industries has released a five-year action plan outlining its goals for the near future. (You can read about Nissan and Infiniti's similar plan, released last week.) Subaru's plan, called Motion-V, covers new models, cooperation with Toyota, and sales goals, among other things.

Three New Models, Hybrid on the Way

The biggest news gleaned from the announcement is the planned addition of three all-new models to the Subaru family, as well as the brand's first hybrid, by 2016. The hybrid model will arrive for 2013 and likely use technology developed with or borrowed from Toyota, Subaru's latest strategic partner. Chances are it will be based on the Impreza or Legacy platform, and not a new, separate model.

We're already familiar with one of the three new models: the eagerly anticipated and yet-unnamed rear-wheel-drive sports car due in spring 2012, a car developed by Subaru and shared with Toyota/Scion. The other two new models aren't discussed, leading us to believe they're a bit further out on the calendar. Understandably, Subaru's not tipping its hand to competitors.

In Japan, Toyota will continue to supply Subaru with the Trezia compact car, which is basically a rebadged Toyota Ractis—itself, a close cousin to the Toyota Yaris. Subaru also will continue an agreement to get minicars from Toyota-controlled Daihatsu, which will provide Subaru with all of its minicar models from spring 2012 onward.

New Technology and Lofty Ambitions

The company says the next half-decade should bring safety features and environmentally friendly technologies never seen before on a Subie. That includes EyeSight, a stereo-camera system for accident avoidance, which was previewed on the Impreza concept but so far hasn't been offered on a production Subaru.

Other stated goals include increasing the fuel efficiency of Subaru products by 30 percent across the product range globally (which the 2012 Impreza proved is realistic), and reducing production expenses by 20 percent, despite rising material costs and regulatory structures that get more demanding by the year. Another initiative seeks to raise the perceived quality of the company's products.

Subaru hopes to raise its worldwide annual sales from the 633,000 it plans for 2012 to 900,000 per year by 2016, on to one million sales per year within the next decade. Subaru is also placing special emphasis on moving metal in China and here in North America, where it hopes 380,000 of those 900,000 units will be delivered.

Those are high marks to hit indeed, but Subaru’s sales in the U.S. have grown even during the recession, so future product along with the upcoming Impreza may be able to sustain the growth.

2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Befriending Stuttgart's twin-turbocharged beast.

Porsche's 911 GT2 RS is a brute, a lightweight, twin-turbocharged, 620-hp bout of madness that stemmed from Stuttgart's quest to see how high up the sports-car ladder the 911 could punch. Overpowered almost to a fault and with enough grip to peel lane markings off the pavement, it is the most serious roadgoing Porsche ever.

Performance Edition Package for Current BMW 335i Adds 20 hp for $550

2011 BMW 335i Sedan

With production of the current generation of BMW 3-series sedan winding down—a new sedan is just around the corner—BMW has announced a very reasonably priced Performance Edition package as a send-off during the months of August, September, and October.

The package costs $550; of highest interest is an output boost from the stock 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque to 320 and 332. It also adds black grilles and grille surrounds, as well as Performance Edition badging. Since the bundle is dealer-installed, it’s available for any rear-wheel-drive 335i coupe or sedan, regardless of gearbox. Folks who already own an N55-powered 335i can even bring their car in for an upgrade, too. BMW hasn’t said whether the package would continue to be offered for the E92 3-series coupe (which will carry on for at least a year) after the new sedan debuts.

For a company that charges $500 for heated front seats, this is a great deal—and perhaps even enough to stave off buyer’s remorse when the new car arrives.

With the Saab 9-4X Headed to Dealers, Swedish Production Remains Halted Until August 9

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Dealers for cash-strapped Saab will begin receiving shipments of new product this week, even though European production has been on hiatus since the second week of June. Arriving on the trucks: the 9-4X crossover, which is built by General Motors in Mexico. GM also designed the 9-4X, and it’s a mechanical twin to the Cadillac SRX that is built at the same facility.

If any vehicle is going to save Saab—or at least pump some cash into the coffers in the short term—it’s the 9-4X. Volvo’s comparable midsize crossover, the XC60, is the company’s second-bestselling product, just as are the Lincoln MKX and Cadillac SRX for their respective brands. With just over 300 cars sold in the U.S. in June, Saab desperately needs the 9-4X to be successful.

As a Deal is Approved, Production is Set to Restart on August 9

Until the five-passenger crossover is able to rack up some sales, Saab will be using money from a just-approved deal to sell 50.1 percent of its factory and the land under it to a Swedish investment group. The Swedish government just approved the sale this week, which sees the investors then leasing the factory back to Saab. The total rake for the automaker is $40 million, and Saab says that will enable the company to pay its suppliers and resume production of the 9-3 and 9-5 on August 9. Whether that will happen, or more issues will arise in the interim—leaders of the company’s labor force indicated recently that they are unhappy with the work stoppages and amount of backpay owed—is uncertain, to say the least.

For more on the situation, including a rundown of Saab’s Chinese investors, check out our Guide to What the Heck Has Happened, Is Happening, and Will Happen with Saab.

2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV EPA Ratings Announced

Mitsubishi's little i-MiEV electric car has been rated by the EPA: 126 city MPGe and 99 highway. Those numbers beat the Nissan Leaf’s 106/92 ratings. Because of its smaller battery pack, the i-MiEV’s projected range of 62 miles trails the Leaf’s by 11 miles. (Our semi-long-term Leaf has been averaging 58 miles to a charge, so YMMV.) In the more optimistic LA4 cycle, the i-MiEV can travel 98 miles on a full battery. When it goes on sale in November, the $27,990 i-MiEV will also beat the $33,630 Leaf on price (both are eligible for a $7500 federal tax credit), making it the least-expensive electric on the market.

In anticipation of the i-MiEV’s launch and to display its commitment to EV technology, Mitsubishi Motors teamed with Mitsubishi Electric to build a solar-powered car-charging station at its North American headquarters in Cypress, California. The station can accommodate four vehicles and is equipped with three types of chargers: 110-volt, 220-volt, and a high-voltage quick charger. The i-MiEV needs 22 hours to fully charge on 110 volts or six hours on 220-volt power, and the quick charger can get it to an 80-percent charge in 25 minutes. Mitsubishi hopes the charging station's central location between Los Angeles and Orange counties will attract EV commuters and will allow owners of any EVs and plug-ins to use the station.

Just $57,725 Will Buy You an Insane, 360-hp 2012 Audi TT RS

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. It’s astonishing that Audi and Porsche are, on a corporate level, parts of the same entity. When ordering a 911, shoppers can specify that the center console—not the dash, mind you, but the trim on top of the transmission tunnel—be painted black. It costs more than $1100. So it’s a bit of a shock, then, that Audi has just priced the 360-hp TT RS at a mere $57,725, including $875 destination.

While that’s more than twice the cost of the Volkswagen GTI on which the TT RS is loosely based, it represents a fantastic value for a performance car—and it’s several thousand dollars cheaper than the rough estimate of $60,000-$65,000 that Audi had given us in the past. The TT RS does, after all, include the company’s maniacal turbocharged five-cylinder engine, with the requisite warble at low speeds and erogenous bleating exhaust note at full throttle.

Equipped with a dual-clutch automatic and standard launch control, we were able to harness the violence of a full-power takeoff and hit 60 from a standstill in a paltry 3.6 seconds. Audi will offer only the six-speed manual (which does not include launch control) in the States; Audi estimates a TT RS so equipped will hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

For some context, the 320-hp Porsche Cayman S starts at $63,050, while the newly introduced 302-hp Mercedes-Benz SLK350 will sting you for $55,675; at least the latter boasts a folding metal roof.

The TT RS is the first RS model offered in the U.S. since the RS4 based on the last-gen A4 was discontinued several years ago. Audi typically rolls out RS versions of cars at the end of their life cycles, and in the case of the TT RS we can confidently say the company saved the best for last.

You can read our review of the TT RS here, and for further five-cylinder madness, check out our first drive of the Audi Q3 equipped with the same engine.

2012 Audi S6 (spy photo)

Because we know you're all anxiously awaiting a car that features the Bentley Continental GT's base motor without all the attendant P. Hilton–esque baggage, we're pleased to present the latest spy photos of the upcoming Audi S6 in American trim. After all, the Euro-spec photos we published back in March couldn't show you what the car looked like wearing a California plate.

2012 Audi S6 (spy photo)

Incidentally, the three latest German hoon saloons (BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, and this car) all will feature the same sort of powerplant—twin-turbo V8s.  The first S6 and E39 M5 packed naturally aspirated bent eights, and the contemporary E55 AMG used a supercharged V-8. And of course, in the most recent fusillade of Teutonic grunt, the last-gen M5 and S6 featured ten-cylinder power, while the E63 showed up with a large-displacement, naturally aspirated eight. Needless to say, studious study is in order and we are nothing if not studly students. Er, sorry. Anyway, study up on these photos, and head here for our previous story on Ingolstadt’s next speedy sedan.

2012 Audi Q3

Audi launches a compact crossover—and dumps the TT RS engine into it.

Not content with the success of the Q5, Audi is launching an even smaller crossover to compete with the BMW X1 and the Acura RDX. While the Q3's underpinnings started with the VW Tiguan platform, the architecture was significantly altered to be considered worthy of Audi's four interconnected rings. "We have taken the most suitable parts from the components bin, and its architecture is basically a mix of the PQ46 [Passat, CC] and the PQ35 [Tiguan, MkVI Golf] platforms," says development coordinator Thomas Soppa.

Or maybe it's a DBS.

It's often pointed out that Aston Martins all pretty much look alike. We know that, you know that, and the people who make them must know, too. But an Aston also looks like a Jaguar, a concept with which the team who cloaked this DB prototype appears to have had some fun.

Lincoln Shuffles MKT Lineup for 2012, Drops Price of 355-hp EcoBoost Model by $3005

2011 Lincoln MKT

For the 2012 model year, Lincoln is dropping one of the MKT's trim levels and lowering the price of the 355-hp EcoBoost version. The 2011 Lincoln MKT came in three flavors, the lowest of which was equipped with Ford's 3.7-liter V-6 engine powering the front wheels. Although that model continues, and maintains its $45,175 base price, all-wheel drive will no longer be available as an option for MKTs with that engine. As a consolation prize, shoppers for three-row crossovers with baleen-whale-inspired styling can now get the MKT with the EcoBoost twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive for $47,170, a drop of $3005 compared to last year’s price. The 2012 Lincoln MKT will hit dealerships later this summer.

If you have attended the Lancer Evolution Experience I presented by Mitsubishi and Jim Russell Racing Drivers School at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, you probably went sideways a lot, and even if you didn't, you surely had a riotous time. Well, here's some good news, go-fast grad: Mitsubishi and JRRDS have just announced a follow-up program especially for you, cleverly called the Lancer Evolution Experience II.

For $1295—$300 more than the starter program—the Lancer Evolution Experience II curriculum focuses on timed competition, starting with a review of the driving exercises covered in the first program followed by multiple laps of Infineon's 12-turn, 2.5-mile track with instructors riding shotgun. The event culminates in a timed-lap competition between the attendees, who by the end of the program will have had plenty of time to shoot dirty looks at each other and accuse each others' mommas of driving Subaru STIs. Speaking of cars, as the name of the program suggests, the Lancer Evolutions used are Evo X models outfitted with Sparco racing seats, safety harnesses, and roll cages.

So if you've had a hankering to go back to school—back to the Lancer Evolution Experience school, that is—click over to www.jimrussellusa.com and get ready to take your driving skills to the next level.

Our spy shooters have already captured camouflaged examples of Infiniti's upcoming seven-seat JX crossover plodding about in the open, but until now, we didn’t have anything official from the company. Today, Infiniti released the first of what will be a series of teaser images of the JX; the rest of the pics will be revealed on its Facebook page during the next seven weeks.

This first photo shows us the JX's front-left headlight, left flank, and a portion of its front wheel. The headlight is very much like those you’d find on the Infiniti FX, and even from this little picture, we can tell that the JX won’t eschew the company’s bulge-friendly design philosophy. The wheels appear to be the same ones that adorned the camo'd tester we recently photographed, although from the awkward angle in this single shot, they look a bit small for a modern car.

Infiniti will reveal the JX crossover in a lightly differentiated concept form at the Pebble Beach concours in August, and the production version will debut at November’s Los Angeles auto show. The automaker says it’ll go on sale in early 2012 as a 2013 model.

Aston Martin to Build 150 Copies of the V12 Zagato, Priced from $526,977

Aston Martin V12 Zagato Front 3-4

Aston Martin will put its sensational V-12 Zagato into production and is taking orders now for deliveries beginning in the second half of 2012 . Base price is £330,000—or $526,977 at current exchange rates. The news of a production V-12 Zagato is hardly surprising; Aston Martin paraded two (fully engineered) race-spec Zagatos around this year's Nürburgring 24-Hour race, and the car itself is based upon Aston's V-12 Vantage (for a full rundown on the Zagato, head over to our previous coverage of its specs here). The V-12 Zagato will be hand-built at Aston Martin's Gaydon facility, and apparently nothing about the car will change in the transition from "concept" to production. This means the Zagato will be powered by a 510-hp, 6.0-liter V-12 engine and wrapped in a handmade aluminum and carbon-fiber body. Aston Martin will build just 150 examples of the V-12 Zagato, so if you have sufficient coin to spend on a racy Aston, we suggest you place your order quickly.

2010 Bentley Continental GTC Speed

Last fall, Bentley unveiled its all-new Continental GT, which is simultaneously lighter, more powerful, and slightly more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. The next-generation GTC convertible and Flying Spur sedan—both of which we hope will offer the same advantages—are up next, and we now have on good authority that the GTC is scheduled to debut this fall at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show.

Of course, you don't have to wait until then to see what it will look like; we ran an artist's rendering of the GTC in our printed publication back in March and some spy shots appeared on our blog in May. By next summer, we expect the juiced-up "Speed" models to appear, one of which was nabbed by our spies out a run just this week.
