2013 Porsche Cayman (spy-photo)

We now have much closer shots of the next Cayman, and they reveal a more 911-like silhouette and front end. The roof appears flatter than the current car's, and we can see just how much the stretched wheelbase affects things like the size of the rear window. Less exciting: This prototype appears to have some kind of sensor in the front fascia's center opening, suggesting some kind of laser- or radar-based system like active cruise control will be offered. Read on for everything we know about Porsche’s next mid-engine coupe.

Toyota Prius Plus Performance Package Brings Body Kit and Lower Springs

The Toyota Prius is pretty much a rolling anathema for enthusiasts, so you're probably not shocked that we greet the announcement of a performance package for the tadpole-shaped hybrid with some doubt. Nevertheless, mining the go-fast expertise of its Toyota Racing Development (TRD) division, Toyota has bundled a ground-effects package, 17-inch five-spoke forged aluminum wheels, "track-tuned" springs that lower the Prius by 1.1 inches up front and 1.3 inches in back, and a rear anti-roll bar to create the Plus Performance package. Toyota gives customers who opt for the kit a choice between white, silver, gray, and black exterior paints, and even throws in unique badges and floor mats.

Rather than play up the sporty additions to the hilt, Toyota is adamant that vehicles with the Plus package are still Priuses at heart. According to the company, the aero bits actually lower the car's coefficient of drag and the lightweight forged aluminum wheels prevent any untoward weight gain, lest the mods come at the expense of fuel efficiency.

The comprehensive handling upgrades do seem to lend a whiff of authenticity to the concept of a "sporty Prius," though, and we must admit that it looks rather purposeful sitting low on its 17-inch wheels—especially coated with the gray or black paint.

The Prius Plus package will be limited, says Toyota, and it will add $3699 to the price of a Prius Two, Three, or Four, and $2999 to the price of a Prius Five. (Those are trim levels, natch.) We'll let you know if it lives up to the (modest) hype when we can get a PPP-equipped car to test.

2013 BMW 3-Series Spied Again, But This Time We Get to See the Interior

On the outside, there isn't anything new to report since we spotted a 2013 BMW 3-series mule back in May, unless you're really into California license plates, which these cars are sporting. The real story here is on the inside, where, to paraphrase one iconic Californian, certain things have come to light.

A few details inside the next 3 will be familiar, like a steering wheel that looks like a simpler version of the one in the 5-series, plus a few of the buttons. But overall, the changes are quite thorough. The updated IP includes new speedometer and tach faces, plus new screens at the bottom that will display trip computer and infotainment details, while the car's new navigation screen draws inspiration from the new 6-series, sitting atop the dashboard like a teeny flat-panel TV.

And then there are the buttons. For the radio controls, they're now convex rather than flat, and the HVAC cluster below is reshaped and incorporates a central screen we haven't seen on any current BMWs. Our favorite change, however, is the DSC button that's been repositioned right above the ignition button. It's the perfect placement for starting the engine and turning off the nannies with unprecedented efficiency. Do you think that falls under BMW's new EfficientDynamics initiatives?

The 2013 3-series is expected to debut in Frankfurt this fall and should arrive on our shores sometime in 2012. (Check out our previous 2013 3-series spy shots here.)

Fancypants Mini Inspired By Goodwood Priced in the U.K.: Costs More than Double a Cooper S

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Mini has priced the 2012 Mini Inspired by Goodwood (full details here) in the U.K. For those in need of a refresher, it’s a Cooper S completely worked over by none other than fellow BMW Grouper Rolls-Royce; it walked the catwalk at this year’s Shanghai auto show. And, uh, it will be expensive. How expensive? Well, before we tell you, allow us to state that a standard Mini Cooper S costs £18,015 in Britain—$28,849 at current exchange rates. Here’s what the Goodwood Mini offers above and beyond that model: an interior and exterior pored over by Rolls designers, who trimmed the cabin with the finest leathers, wood, and polished metal, and who subtly classed up the outside with a monochromatic treatment punctuated by chrome detailing.

For this Roller massage, Mini is asking £41,000—and there’s no need to grab a calculators to understand how expensive that is. The Goodwood's price is more than double that of the car on which it’s based. At current exchange rates the Goodwood doesn't quite "ring in" so much as it "thud in" at a whopping $65,657. Of course, when they sell a few of these little buggers over here, it’s more likely that the price in dollars will look something like the one in pounds sterling: We figure $40K to $45K is a good rough estimate.

It might help to think of the Mini Goodwood as something of a tiny Rolls-Royce, which would make it the least expensive new Roller available. Furthermore, the Goodwood Mini's single competitor, the Aston Martin Cygnet, costs £30,995 in the U.K., some triple the £9995 required for the Toyota iQ which serves as that model’s roots. Thus, the Mini's luxury-version-to-cheap-version price ratio is a more-favorable 2.28:1 versus the Cygnet's 3.10:1, making it a something of a value in the highly competitive tiny, sybaritic hatchback class. Mini will only produce 1000 of the Goodwood Minis, and British customers can place orders for one starting today.

Swappable Battery News: Better Place Opens Its First European Station, and the Renault Fluence is Cheap in the U.K.

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Better Place, an Israeli company that developed an automated electric-vehicle-battery swap station, expanded beyond the Middle East this week, opening its first station in Europe. The Denmark station will function as do the other Better Place stations in Israel, automatically removing the enormous battery pack from a special Renault Fluence Z.E. electric car and reinstalling a fresh unit. This holds a great deal of promise for EVs; current electric vehicle technology is limited not only by battery capacity and recharge time, but by infrastructural hurdles like a lack of available charging stations. A battery switching station—itself a gargantuan bit of infrastructure that would need to be paid for and installed—helps solve at least some of these issues by swapping the depleted battery pack out of an electric car for a fresh, fully charged battery pack in a timely manner, eliminating the typical several-hour wait for a full battery recharge.

At the same time, Renault is launching the Fluence Z.E. in the U.K., and has priced the vehicle very reasonably. How reasonably? Try £17,850 after a £5000 government grant for plug-in cars. At current exchange rates, that translates to $28,535, a whopping $5095 than a base Nissan Leaf here in the States. (More important, perhaps, is the relative affordability of the car in the U.K. A Mini Cooper S, for example, starts at roughly £18,000.) Customers are also on the hook for a $120 per month lease for the battery pack, as well.

The car that British shoppers will soon be able to buy features the same battery pack that’s compatible with Better Place’s switching stations—leading us to think that the Israeli firm has plans to expand its operations to the British Isles some time soon. Even without the station, of course, the Fluence Z.E. can recharge through a traditional power outlet, as does the Leaf. The Fluence Z.E. will feature charging ports on each of its front fenders, an electric motor that produces 94-hp and 167 lb-ft of torque, and a claimed range of 115 miles.

Better Place plans to open 19 more battery switching stations in Denmark over the next nine months, and later in 2011 a switching station is set to open in Australia's capital city, Canberra. The Renault Fluence Z.E. goes on sale next year as a 2012 model in Europe and Australia.

Better Place—a company that builds and integrates sustainable energy infrastructures—opened its first battery switching station in Denmark today, the first station of its kind in Europe. Better Place has already begun populating Israel with battery swapping stations, and the infrastructure is compelling for the future of EVs. Current electric vehicle technology is limited not only by battery capacity and recharge time, but by infrastructural hurdles like a lack of available charging stations. A battery switching station helps solve these issues by swapping the depleted battery pack out of an electric car for a fresh, fully charged battery pack in a timely manner, eliminating the typical several-hour wait for a full battery recharge.

2011 Lotus Evora S

One for the faithful.

Aside from the expected practicality limitations of a purist's sports car, we've found the regular Lotus Evora to be a pretty satisfying machine. It's as balanced as a tightrope walker and has laser-precise steering, limpet grip, and strong braking.

Nissan/Infiniti Planning 12 New Models for the U.S. in the Next Five Years: Here’s a Breakdown

Nissan has revealed its international “Midterm Plan Announcement”—a product plan for the next six years that the company is more colorfully calling “Nissan Power 88.” Whatever the name, this is a major product offensive for Nissan, which will unveil a new product somewhere in the world every six weeks for the next six years; the total should be 51 new cars and trucks worldwide. The U.S. will see a significant number of these. Over the next four years, Nissan will launch seven new models in the States, and Infiniti will benefit from five vehicle introductions. Here’s the breakdown.

Nissan

Altima

Nissan’s family sedan—and the nameplate that saved the brand in the U.S. a decade ago—is due for replacement with an all-new model some time in 2013 or 2014. It will probably be more evolutionary than revolutionary, and this teaser rendering (which is taken from the company’s presentation) reminds very much of the current car.

2010 Nissan Sentra

Sentra

The me-too Sentra is also aged and ready for a remake. But it’s still a strong seller in the segment. Can we ask for the next SE-R to borrow the excellent 1.6-liter turbo four from the Juke?

NV200

New York City recently settled on Nissan’s NV200 small van to serve as the city’s taxi starting in a few years. We strongly expect the company to offer a version of the van—which is comparable to a Ford Transit in size and shape—to regular retail customers, too.

2011 Nissan MuranoThree-Row Crossover

To the left, you can see the current Nissan Murano. Just as Infiniti is receiving a three-row crossover on the Murano’s platform (read more about it below), so, too, will Nissan.

2008 Nissan TitanHeavier-Duty Titan

Nissan’s Titan was never a hit with customers, and its platform is now quite old. We expect Nissan to replace it in 2013 or 2014, and, as we previously reported, it should ride on a frame derived from the heavy-duty underpinnings of the new Nissan NV full-size van.

Maxima Replacement

The car we know in the U.S. as the Maxima is closely related to a sedan sold in other countries as the Teana. Our Maxima was introduced in 2008 as a 2009 model, so the image here that teases the next-gen Teana probably presages a replacement for the Maxima, too. Figure on Nissan cramming even more high-tech toys and gadgetry into the car.

Nissan Logo

Surprise Vehicle

Nissan’s product plans call for seven new vehicles to be introduced to the U.S. by the end of 2014. What’s the seventh? It’s too early to say. For the company that put the Murano CrossCabriolet into production, anything is possible. Can we request something like the ESFLOW or the Urge concepts?

Infiniti

2013 Infiniti JX Crossover Spy Photo

Three-Row Luxury Crossover

We expect to see the new JX three-row crossover this year, and an L.A. auto  show debut seems likely—it’s the only major American show left on the  calendar for 2011.

Infiniti Etherea concept

Front-Drive Hatchback

In 2013 and 2014, Infiniti has plans to roll out an additional four models that it’s calling “all new.” One will be a front-wheel-drive hatchback aimed at the Audi A3, which was previewed with the 2011 Etherea concept. (You can read our first drive of the hand-built concept here.)

Electric Vehicle

Also in either 2012 or 2014, Infiniti will launch an electric vehicle, which will be based on the Nissan Leaf’s architecture. We previewed this car as part of our most recent “25 Cars Worth Waiting For” package.

2010 IUnfiniti G37 sedan

G37/G25

Next up: the next-generation G, which we expect to return in sedan, coupe, and convertible forms in 2013. We’ve heard that the car’s manual transmission is in jeopardy; we hope it remains available as an option on at least some G models.

Flagship Sedan, Compact Crossover or Something Else

This leaves space for one more all-new Infiniti model; take your pick on speculation of it being a new range-topping Q luxury sedan, a replacement for the slow-selling EX crossover, or something else altogether.

Ferrari P4/5 Competizione

Finishing isn't the only thing—but it's way ahead of the next-best option.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours is like The Perfect Storm in a forest. Rain, shine, or snow, more than 220,000 racing fans, powered by the best beer in the world, gather for the most overwhelming, pagan auto race on earth. Wall Streeter Jim Glickenhaus, owner and patron of the privateer Ferrari F430–based P4/5 Competizione—about which you can read in tantalizing depth here—was a first-timer at the 2011 event, and he was awestruck. "It's like Woodstock! People camp out in the woods for days. There are rock concerts. There's a burning man [like at Burning Ma]! It's unbelievable!"

2011 Pikes Peak Recap: After 89 Years, Change Comes Again to the Mountain

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

The Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado is the second-oldest continuous motorsports event in the United States, after the race at Indy. But having just dropped its 89th checkered flag, Pikes Peak is about to change radically. After 11 years under construction, the $20 million paving of the 12.4-mile course up the 14,100-foot mountain is nearly complete. Only about two miles of dirt remains, and the date of the 90th Hillclimb in 2012 is being moved to later in the summer to allow the paving crews to finish their work.

After that, the road up Pikes will resemble a slightly shorter, somewhat tighter, open-ended version of the Nürburgring. Anything will be possible, including sending up F1 cars and Le Mans prototypes in a manufactured-sponsored all-out war for Pikes Peak supremacy. The race already has an electric-car demonstration class: The first car waved off the line this year was a Nissan Leaf, making it up in a respectable 14:33.429, which wasn't even the slowest time.

No doubt sensing the new opportunities, executives from Audi, Renault, BMW, and Porsche were spied this year sniffing around the pits and the pre-race Fan Fest in downtown Colorado Springs. Audi of America PR director Jeff Kuhlman, bumped into at Fan Fest, said there's nothing to announce but the company is considering running "some type of historic car" next year. PR men are not above creating smoke screens. Sending Michele Mouton's winning 1985 Quattro Sport S1 up the hill seems less likely than running something that could actually bag a record, like this year's Le Mans–winning Audi R18. Kuhlman just shrugged, but Audi is definitely interested in making a bigger splash in U.S. motorsports.

At a dinner with automotive journalists recently, Audi of America president Johan de Nysschen asked the table point-blank how the company can influence potential buyers through racing in the States. In retrospect, I wish I had thought to say "Pikes Peak," instead of what I did say, which was, "Forget racing and concentrate on golf."

Veteran Pikes Peaker Jeff Zwart, who finished Pikes second in class this year with an 11:07.869 in a Porsche 911 GT2 that he drove out from Los Angeles, figures only one issue prevents Audi from running the R18. "The turning radius would have to be reduced," to get through the course's many hairpins, he says.

The hillclimb could also become a round in a national or international series, as it was when USAC made it a points-earning event in the 1960s. Zwart says he's had discussions with American Le Mans Series president and CEO Scott Atherton about adding a Pikes round to the nine-race series. Once heavily contested by factory-supported specials in the 1980s—and then largely abandoned to the shadetree amateurs—Pikes Peak may once again return to the A-list of global motorsports events. Press coverage will increase and crowds will swell. The two-hour traffic jam off the mountain at the end of this year's event may soon be remembered fondly for its relative expediency.

Old timers like New Zealand rally samurai Rod Millen, who has set the record five times and who will forever be the fastest driver on the all-dirt Pikes Peak (10:04.06 in 1994 in a Toyota Celica All-Trac turbo), says the mountain just won't be the same. "It was a wonderful era. Every corner was a challenge. If it rained overnight, as it often did, you would have an all-new course from the day before," he said. Rod made a comeback this year in son Rhys's Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car, winning the fast 2WD Time Attack class with an 11:04.902. After retiring once before in 2001, Rod said that this time he is retiring for good.

Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, the self-proclaimed "King of the Mountain" who set a new world record for fastest ascent up the course in his Suzuki SX4 Pikes Peak Special, isn't retiring yet, but his car is. Despite losing power steering, pegging the temperature needles, and nearly blowing up the Suzuki's 910-hp, twin-turbo 3.1-liter Grand Vitara–based V-6, Tajima finally demolished the 10-minute barrier with a time of 9:51.278. He is reportedly constructing a new car that will be optimized for pavement.

Rhys Millen was thought to be Monster's only challenger, but fading brakes on his Hyundai-powered PM580 prototype over the last four miles of the course dropped him into a distant second place with a time of 10:09.242. One look at the low, curvy Red Bull–sponsored PM580, and it’s clear Rhys is ready for the new era of asphalt. With its closed and flowing carbon-fiber bodywork, it looks a little bit like the Audi R18 and may represent the future of Pikes Peak.

Being a spectator at Pikes Peak takes commitment. The single road up is narrow and has few safe areas for parking. The best spots are often taken days before by hard-core fans in campers. Because the road closes well before the first car is flagged off at 9:00 A.M., it's a predawn wake-up call even if you're coming from nearby Colorado Springs.

Once the road goes hot, you're stuck wherever you are. This year, with its numerous red flags for crashes, mechanical failures, and cases of altitude sickness among course workers, the event ran more than seven hours.

The 14,100-foot summit with its cafe and gift shop is too small to accommodate many cars, so access is restricted to competitors, press, and the few who manage to get tickets on the cog railway from Manitou Springs. The first thing you notice when stepping off a bus at the summit is that there is no breathable air. At least, your body doesn't think so, because the smallest act—standing up, sitting down, unzipping your fly, picking the yogurt pretzels out of a bag of trail mix—causes your lungs to collapse, your lips to turn blue, and the horizon to weeble-wobble.

The second thing you notice is this: though it may have been a beautiful, balmy morning at 5:00 A.M. when you boarded the bus in summertime-steamy Colorado Springs, by the time you crawl through race traffic to reach the summit some two and a half hours later, the temperature is 37 degrees and the wind is blowing at 39 mph.

Despite the obstacles and the changes, Pikes will always be unique, which is why it's likely to grab world attention once again when the factories return in force.

2012 Hyundai Elantra coupe (spy photo)

We nab exclusive spy shots of Hyundai's upcoming two-door Elantra.

It wasn't long ago that two-door variants of compact cars were both expected and somewhat popular, but the options lately have dwindled. Even the Americans—once mainstays in the segment—have backed out, with the new Ford Focus and the Chevy Cruze eschewing the formula, while Chrysler hasn't had a little coupe since the first-generation Neon. Absent those, in which cars will high school girls of the future hang leis and plastic necklaces? A two-door Honda Civic or a Kia Forte Koup? No way. Those, like, aren't even that cute.
