BMW's hot little 1-series M, which some consider to be the spiritual successor to the original E30 M3, appears to be a one-model-year-only special. "At the moment, we can only confirm production for one model year," said BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky. "A second model year production run seems very unlikely at this stage due to capacity constraints at the Leipzeg assembly plant." Plucinsky added that Leipzeg is preparing the production ramp-up of the new, higher-volume 1-series five-door.
Next Up: The M2
While the car known as the 1-series M may be called the 1-series M for just one year, a successor to the car itself is likely to emerge at some point in the future under the 2-series banner. As we stated in a report last year when BMW registered various 2-series monikers, including "M2,” BMW has now begun to split the 1-series into distinct hatchback and coupe/convertible lines, with the aforementioned, heavily face-lifted 1-series hatchback sold in overseas markets. The coupe and convertible will continue to be sold here, and they’ll remain roughly the same until all 1-series models are replaced come the 2014 model year. At that point, expect the rear-drive replacement to take on the 2-series designation, eventually spawning the M2, while the 1-series badge will be applied to front-wheel-drive models scheduled to share a platform and engines with the next-generation Mini.
