At an owners’ event in Oshawa, Ontario, this past weekend, a spokesperson for General Motors confirmed that the über-Camaro, the ZL1, will be available with either a manual or an automatic transmission. When the car was revealed at the Chicago auto show this past February, it was shown with a manual.
The automatic will be the same unit used in the Cadillac CTS-V, which also lends its engine to the ZL1. It’s a robust six-speed torque-converter automatic, and in the Caddy, presents a nice alternative to a manual gearbox that’s not always smooth. Considering that the ZL1′s buyers are probably old enough to remember the original ZL1—which was sold only in 1969—the two-pedal setup is a smart move for keeping those customers happy.
As far as we know, the ZL1′s closest competitor, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, will remain stick-only.
