To most, the automotive battery is a 25-pound, 12-volt brick that needs to be jumped when the family truckster won't start. To hybrid owners, a battery is an ersatz fuel tank that reduces the number of trips to the gas station. But there's much more than that to these energy-storage devices, which vary  widely in terms of chemistry, size, and capacity. As more and more plug-ins and EVs enter the market, we thought it high time to examine the ongoing evolution of the automotive battery.
