The upcoming generation of Mercedes-Benz compact cars is turning out to be the worst-kept secret in the automotive world. A few weeks ago, public patent filings outed the next-gen A-class; now, thanks to an Italian car blog, we’ve got a completely undisguised photo of the Mercedes-Benz B-class.
Despite different names, the A and B will be close siblings, sharing new front-wheel-drive architecture. The difference is that the A will be more of a traditional hatchback like the Volkswagen Golf, while the B will be a mini MPV—that’s Eurospeak for multipurpose vehicle—which means it will have a higher roof and more cargo space.
Previously, we reported that three- and five-door versions of the A-class would come to the States, as well as a CLS-style sedan and a small crossover. Based on what we see here, we think it’s unlikely that the “small crossover” that was described to us is the B-Class—it’s too dorky and not styled enough like an SUV.
