Gearbox: Driving Bibs Tested

Accidents happen. But for grown-ups, spilling food on oneself while driving isn't an accident, it's called slobbishness. Still, if social anxiety prevents you from choosing the dine-in option, there's a way to keep your clothes, if not your dignity, unsoiled. We tested two of a disturbingly large number of available adult bibs.

SlobStopper

SlobStopper $14.95, plus $5.95 shipping
• The SlobStopper promises to repel almost everything with its absorbent material and waterproof backing. We tried, and, sure enough, liquids didn't get through. The only thing missing is a pocket at the bottom to catch crumbs. Bonus: It can double as a cape, which is not at all humiliating to wear in public. (www.slobstopper.com)

The Drib

The Drib $19.95, plus $7.95 shipping
• The Drib has two important features: a fabric top layer that can be used as a napkin and a pocket at the bottom for storing extra cheeseburgers. It's heavy, in a good way, and the backside is waterproof nylon. In lieu of a Velcro collar, the Drib has weights that drape over your shoulders to hold it in place. (www.thedrib.com; 260-824-7669)
